Why we shouldn’t make intelligent people througheugenics Bill Wang

Eugenics studies are about improving a human population by controllingthe occurrence of the desirable trait. To improve a human population, onebranch of its study focuses on improving the human’s intelligence. However, even if it’s beneficial for the people itself, I think we couldn’t and shouldn’timprove the human intelligence through means of eugenics.

Onereason is that intelligence can’t be fixed. This can clearly be seen in twodifferent perceptive, in which both of them influence each other: both theculture and the environment that the people live in. The second reason is thatin order for a society to flourish, it needs a variety of people, not just oneof a kind.

The fact theintelligence isn’t a fix thing can be seen in the different cultures around theworld. We can see this clearly when we compare the Taiwanese concept ofintelligence and the American concept of intelligence. Taiwan conceptionunderlines 5 big factors: (a) A general cognitive factor (b) Interpersonalintelligence (c). Intrapersonal intelligence (d.) intellectual self-asser论文范文http://www.chuibin.com/ tion(e.) intellectual self-effacement. However, the Western concept of intelligenceis only based on (a.) practical problem-solving (b.) verbal abilities and (c.)social competence (Sternberg, 149). Also, different perceptive around the worldalso have different view on intelligence. For example, the Confucian emphasizeson the characteristic of benevolence while the West, an intelligent personspent time learning, enjoy learning and uses his best effort (Sternberg, 149).Although some people may argue that we could make different “intelligent ”people according to the different cultures, another factor would make itliterally impossible to make any intelligent people: the environment that isconstantly changing

The concept ofintelligence is not only based on your culture’s definition , it also requiresyou to “adapt” and survive in your changing environment. We can see thenegative effects it has once you can’t and find a balance and unable to adaptto your new environment. For example, let’s look at the impact of the Internet. In 2010, about 30.1% of the worlduses the Internet, a 20% increase since the year 2002. Among these 30%, 71.6% of theusers are in developed countries, such as the USA (A near 32% percent of increase since 2002) and 21.1% are indeveloping countries, a 20% increase (Internet user graph). However, accordingto another statistic graph, it shows that more than 85% of the people spentmore than 7 hours checking their e-mails in 2004, and 70% of the people spentmore than 7 hours playing video games, the majority of them being teenagers (Latina,1). The harmful results can be seen from it, such as game addiction, healthproblems, lack of social competence and so on. This also changed the concept ofintelligence, adding one more definition of intelligence in the Westernperspectives: being able to control oneself( Latina, 2). Although the Internethas done a major effect on people’s lives, it can also be harmful if we can’tadapt into it and find a balance between the virtual reality and the realworld.
