1.1. Research significance

In recent years, with the continuous development of the economy, the improvement of China's comprehensive national strength has made all countries in the world full of curiosity and expectations about China's model and road of the development. Both superpowers and emerging economies want to understand and learn from China who realizes a miracle in economy and actively seeks for opportunities and challenges created by China's development for themselves. Against this background, the political discourses in the documents of major conferences and the internal or external speeches of Chinese leaders have become the window for the international community to understand the new thinking, the new goals and the new reform of the new central leadership of China.

Political documents such as the report of the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China and government work report, which include the central government’s summary and review of recent work, planning and prospecting for future work, and national policies, are very important for people to understand the government’s work initiatives in recent year, the historical mission of the Communist Party of China in the new era, and learn the socialist thought and basic strategy with Chinese characteristics. Among them, a large number of political discourses with Chinese characteristics not only embody rich policy connotation, but also have good communication effects, which are widely used in the process of foreign exchange and publicity. L. Xie and Wang (2018: 7) have said

“Political discourse bears witness and gives explanation to China’s successful practice and great achievements in the course of revolution, construction and reform.  It  is  also  the core of the discourse content     for international communication. The translation of political discourse is thereby of significant role in the building of a country or a nation’s image”.

With the continuous progress in economic globalization and political multi- polarization, and deepened communication of different civilizations in the 21th century, the exchanges between different cultures have become increasingly frequent. Due to the increase of China’s foreign exchanges, the translation of political discourse has also ushered in new development opportunities, in which, the translation of political discourses with Chinese characteristics directly affects the external communication effect of political discourse. It plays an important role in promoting the understanding of Chinese and foreign cultures, shaping of China’s national image, and the expansion of national influence.

Dou (2016: 106) has pointed out political discourse is different from the translation of general works, which mainly considers whether it can be understood. While political discourse translation not only pays attention to understanding, but also emphasizes the acceptability, including the language and political content. Therefore, in the process of translation, we are required to fully consider the differences between China and the West in the political system, culture and social environment. What’s more, we should fully embody Chinese characteristics as well as pay attention to the accuracy, authority and acceptability of translation. Yang and Zhao (2012: 39) also note, “the translation of political text requires higher loyalty, sensitivity of political ideology, accuracy of wording and certain readability.” Only in this way can we promote different audiences to understand and respect China’s political system, avoid misunderstandings and distortions, in order to enhance China’s international discourse power, and better build the building of national image.

1.2. Research approach and thesis structure

In the paper, inductive approach will be taken in the research.Inductive  approach,  also  known  as  inductive  reasoning,  is  a  technology   of mathematical proof. Inductive reasoning is the premise seeking to provide strong evidence for the authenticity of the conclusion. The purpose of this method is to generate meaning from the collected data set in order to identify patterns and relationships and to establish theories. In the research, statistical analysis will be used to collect all the political discourses of which the translations have changed in the past three years.
