Title The Linguistic Mechanism and Translation of English Humor: A Cross-culture Perspective
Abstract
The fast development of globalization has accelerated the study of cultural phenomenon from a cross-culture perspective. Humor, as a special culture phenomenon is of great importance in almost every aspect in our life. Studies focus on this thesis attempt to explore humor’s linguistic mechanism thoroughly, and basically the thesis study the linguistic mechanism from phonological, lexical, syntactic, logical, rhetorical perspectives, together with the Cooperative principle and Relevance theory; Besides，this thesis also focus on the translatability of humor based on basic theories like Functional Equivalence Theory, The Relevance Theory and General Theory of Verbal Humor. Hopefully, the thesis would be of use for English learners to have a deeper understanding of English culture and can help improve the translation ability when deal with certain language phenomenon.

1 Introduction
1.1 Humor study as a cultural concern
Humor is a genre of linguistic interactions that often emerges in daily conversation, it is the tendency of particular cognitive experiences to provoke laughter and provide amusement. With the development of internet and other mass media, as well as the fast development of globalization, nowadays English humor gradually shows its charm among non-English countries, vise versa. However, due to the influence of different culture where humors derived from and depended on, it’s necessary to study humor’s cultural differences and that’s the major reason of this thesis to study humor from a cross-culture perspective.
Scholars at home and abroad have done a lot of inquiries in linguistic mechanism of humor. They have done researches based on the Cooperative Principle, the Relevance Theory, Conceptual Blending Theory, as well as Cognitive Theory to study the language mechanism, communication effects and cognitive characteristics of humor (Cui Yahui, 2008).
