There are many examples because there is no a translation standard and the translators misunderstanding.
For example, the American film American Beauty is translated into 《美国丽人》, but it is a mistranslation. In the USA, American Beauty refers to a kind of red rose which can bloom a whole year. In the movie, this kind of rose appeared a lot of times. It is a symbol of the impulse, desire and confusion that the middle-aged man have. Due to the lack of the understanding of American culture, the translator has to translate it according to the literal meaning. So the audience will find the content of the movie is not compatible with the title. Another example is First Blood. It told a story about a retired soldier named Rambo from the US Special Forces. The sergeant of the town treated him harshly and always censured him without any reason. Rambo resisted after a long-term toleration. He finally defeats the evil force successfully. And in English idioms, first blood means that win in the very first battle(首战告捷). The translation《第一滴血》 is obvious a mistranslation.
After correct understanding of the content of the movie and the title cultural connotation contains, the translation process also needs to follow certain theory basis and translation method, otherwise, mistranslation or translating the title only depending on one's own subjective consciousness will lead to a chaotic situation.
Translation is a process of choice. But in the face of many possibilities, what standard should we base on? According to Verschueren's theory of adaptation, the purpose of making choices is to make communication go smoothly. Translation has direct connection with communication. Translation is a cross-language and cross-cultural communication activities. The translation of the movie title needs obey the adaptation of language and culture. It ought to satisfy the requirements of the audience with the progress of era. Therefore, the title's translation is not copy the content and the style of the original title, but to deal with it flexibly. Verschueren explained the theory of adaptation form four aspect: context, language structure, dynamics and salience. His theory provides us a good theory basis. Choosing proper translation methods bases on this standard decreases the possibility of miss translation and makes the translator translate the title correctly and vividly. To a certain extent, it makes a great contribution to the box office results. It also has a great significance to the translation practice.
