Title Growing, redemption and national culture: reading the Kite Runner from the perspective of identity construction of Amir
Abstract
The Kite Runner is the first novel of Afghan background written in English and is also
the debut work of Khaled Hosseini. The novel is written through the first person
perspective, and tells a childhood story of an Afghan immigrant named Amir in the
United States and his process of spiritual redemption when he grows up for the mistake
he made in the childhood. This paper examines the novel from a perspective of identity
construction of the protagonist, Amir. By close reading and analyzing the life
experience of the protagonist Amir in both Afghan and the United States and the
process of his self-redemption, this thesis aims to interpret the complete process of
Amir’s identity construction.

1 Introduction
Khaled Hosseini is an Afghan-born American novelist and physician of racial Tajik
background. Life experience in different countries endowed him with rich cultural
accumulations and unique insights. Therefore, his descriptions about the history of
Afghanistan are much more persuasive, which includes the political tumultuous issue,
the Taliban regime, racial conflicts and national war. In the year 2003, Hosseini’s
debut novel, The Kite Runner, thrust into the world’s spotlight and won him great
fame and success as well , making him the first Afghan that published an English
novel.
The Kite Runner presents the world an Afghanistan that is totally different from the
one they knew. It tells a story of fierce cruelty and redeeming love which happens
between Amir, the young narrator and his little buddy Hassan. Virtually, there was a
secret kept by the fathers that Amir and Hassan were blood brothers, however, their
