2。1 Research on Science Fiction and science fiction translation

2。1。1 Definition of science fiction

Never has there been a literary genre harder to define than Science Fiction。 In the history of western science fiction, it has been called by different names in different publications including Science Romance, Off-trail, StoryScience Fantasy, Different Story, Impossible Story and Astounding Story(Wu Yan, 2006:9)。It is Hugo Gernsback, an editor of Amazing Stories in the United States, who picked the term “Science Fiction” coined by English writer William Wilson up as a substitute for the awkward name “sciencefiction”made by him in 1926 to refer to this genre。 Soon this term spread across the country and later across the world(Jiang Qian, 2006:20)。

According to Chinese Encyclopedia·The Volume of Chinese science Literature(1993), three key elements“science”,“fantasy”,and “fiction” constitute science fiction, and science fiction describes fantasy rather than reality。 But this definition is somewhat debatable in that the distinction between fantasy and nonsense is a little bit confusing。 And to explain the traits of a literary genre with only three elements is not compendious。

While science fiction, as a particular genre, describes scientific discoveries and creations that have not been achieved yet according to the volume of Soviet Union Encyclopedia。 However this definition is also not very compendious and a bit one-sided。来自优I尔Q论T文D网WWw.YoueRw.com 加QQ7520~18766

Many writers have also made their own peculiar definition of science fiction。 According to the British science fiction writer Brain Stableford“Science fiction is essentially a kind of fiction in which people learn more about how to live in the real world, visiting imaginary worlds unlike our own, in order to investigate by way of pleasurable thought-experiments how things might be done differently”。American science fiction writer and critic Professor James E。Gunn gave the definition that “Science fiction is a branch of literature that deals with the impact of change in the real world, as it can be projected into the past, the future, or the far away。 It is often related to changes in science or technology, and it is usually involved in matters that are of greater importance than inpiduals or societies; often civilization or race itself is at risk”。 (Gunn James,1972)

However it is still difficult to give a unanimous definition to science fiction。 Edward James(1994:11) pointed out that “there is no generally agreed definition of science fiction is, of course, largely a result of the fact that since 1929 science fiction has been in a state of constant change”。

Besides the fact that there is no consensus on the definition of science fiction, people generally agree on the fundamental characteristics of science fiction。 First, as a literary genre, science fiction should embody all the defining factors of literature including theme, set, character, plot, narrator and so on。 Second, scientificity comprises another characteristic of science fiction, which means that science should serve as the very foundation of imagination and fancy(Guo Jianzhong,2004:126)。 郭建中翻译原则视角下的《北京折叠》英译(2):http://www.chuibin.com/yingyu/lunwen_201757.html
