Abstract Catch-22 is the novel that is extremely serious and ironical. During World WarⅡ, the world is governed by the war, and human rights and desires are tightly suppressed. The rules like catch-22 are everywhere like nets above that make people can not escape from it. The novel has been very popular since its release. The cultural and artistic value of it is inestimable, as its writing technique is regarded as one of the representative books of black humor. The author of this paper mainly described its artistic beauty by analyzing the theme, black humor, writing skills and its historical position so as to make readers have a better understanding of the artistic beauty of it.

The Artistic Charm of Catch-22
I. Introduction`
Catch-22 is the first and also the most important long novel of Joseph Heller. The master piece has been a crucial part of modern literature and one of the representatives of black humor since it was published in 1961 in USA. The artistic charm of it has attracted many attentions around the world in aspects such as the theme, language features and values.
The book is a masterpiece of black humor. In the novel, there is a regulation “catch- 22” which says that only a madman can get away from flying but he must submit an application by himself. However, how can a mad man submit an application by himself? And it also said that pilots can return home if the time of flying has arrived at the regulated time; however at the same time, he must obey the command or he will not be allowed to return home. The book described the conflictive scene between the ridiculous world and people living in it. The book quickly became successful from its first release. Related data shows that there have had 146 foreign review articles on the book by now. And in China, more and more scholars pay attention to the book and write out books and essays to research different aspects of it. The related data shows that there are at least 130 academic papers and about catch-22 on the CDMD (Chinese Doctor and Master’s Database) (Sun Chunmei 15). Among all these papers, 48 papers talk about its theme and 66 papers focus on the writing skills. The other papers mainly study on its absurdity as well as other aspects such as artistic technique and theme. For example, On the Art of Irony of Catch-22 from Duan Congli of Hebei Normal University and On Uncertainty of Catch-22 from Zhang Huimin of Heilongjiang University are works related to Catch-22. And there are also 133 periodicals and 57 monographs in it related to the book.
