Abstract Vocabulary plays an important role in language learning. Words have the significance of the smallest units of language, as bricks are the smallest units of buildings. Human thinking and the exchange of ideas are the first to rely on vocabulary. Expanding the vocabulary size is one of the main tasks for college students in English learning, especially the Non-English majors. When Non-English majors talk about learning vocabulary, they feel that it is a headache to remember them, because of their special characters such as their poor English foundation, lack of good study habits and shortage of proper vocabulary learning strategies. Therefore, it is extremely necessary for Non-English majors to develop some suitable vocabulary learning strategies.
60 sophomore students, who come from Shanghai Institute of Technology School, participated in the research. The research would be conducted through three methods: questionnaire、test and personal interviews. Afterwards, the data would be collected and analyzed. The results prove that Non-English majors would benefit a lot in vocabulary learning after been trained by the associative strategies. It is in accordance with the hypotheses:
(1)With the associative strategies, Non-English majors in SIT feel easier to learn new words.
(2) With the associative strategies, they feel they could turn the short-memory into long memory in vocabulary learning.
(3) With the associative strategies, they feel it could help them expand their vocabulary sizes
Base on it, the author proposed some pedagogical enlightenment, including teaching words to students both in breadth and in depth.
In a word, associative strategy is an effective vocabulary learning strategy. The findings of the study provide a new perspective on vocabulary learning strategy, and meanwhile, the significance of the study can be viewed as a useful help step for further research.
