The oneness of terminology is mainly presented in the following two ways. First of all, each scientific term contains a specific concept in finance, which can not be replaced by any other word. A case in point is that in the phrase “credit standing”, “standing” could not be changed into “position” for it represents the meaning of the reputation for discharging financial obligations. The word “standby” can also be taken as another example. In the phrase “standby credit”, it is of no possibility for the word “spare” to take the place of “standby”, for the interpretation of the term is ready to be used if needed instead of being left.
In the second place, though belonging to a common national language, one term is only used to represent one sense. Since there are many branching fields in finance, each word is required to explain the meaning of its correspondingly specific field. For example, the term “bid” normally means an authoritative direction or instruction to do something. However, when it comes to the field of finance, this term could only be used to represent the highest price, a market maker is prepared to pay for security, commodity or currency. It also means, in stocking, an offer to buy, for instance in an auction or tender, or in an attempt to acquire a controlling stake in a company-as in a takeover bid. In addition, the word “cap” with its general meaning a tight-fitting headdress, has different explanations in the relating financial filed as well. In finance, this is normally used with respect to interest rates. In the bond market, for example, an issuer may cap the yield on a floating rate note. A cap is also an interest rate derivative that pays money to its holder if the underlying interest rate goes above an agreed strike level.
