Abstract A contrastive study of politeness principle in Western and Chinese society can help English learners have a better understanding of the politeness principle in both languages and the Western and Chinese cultures as well so as to understand and use politeness principle appropriately in intercultural communication.In this paper, the contrastive analysis of politeness principle in Western and Chinese is made from three aspects: daily communication, value concept system and thought mode. The relationship between culture, language and politeness principle has also been discussed. Several major types of politeness principle in Western and Chinese are analyzed to manifest the similarities and differences of Western and Chinese culture.The final conclusion can be drawn that to be familiar with the cultural differences between Western and Chinese politeness principle can promote intercultural communication proceed successfully.

I. Introduction
In the study of politeness principle, a contrastive analysis of politeness principle in different cultures is great significance since we now live in the word, people from different cultures. Although politeness principle is a common principle in the word, people from one culture may have different opinions on politeness principle from another culture in intercultural communication. Therefore, my thesis is based on contrastive analysis. The thesis will examine the differences of politeness principle in Western and Chinese and discuss how to use politeness principle effectively in communication.
We are concerned that, with more and more cross-culture interactions,the discussion of the differences between English and Chinese in the area of politeness realization will definitely be significant for the purpose of increasing interlocutors’ cultural awareness and communicative competence. Politeness is a feature of language. But it also has a cultural feature. Understanding the differences can avoid the pragmatic failures and achieve success in cross-culture communication. For English learners, it can also help develop and improve their pragmatic competence. This thesis tries to give a brief review of the study of politeness in the English culture as well as the study of politeness in the Chinese culture. Meanwhile, it introduces the main ideas of the theories concerned, namely, Brown and Levinson’s Face Theory, Leech’s politeness principle and Gu Yue Guo’s politeness maxims in modern Chinese . Its task is to make comparison of politeness principle between Chinese and English cultures and review their cultural differences.
