II. Elementary Analysis of Gatsby’s Love for Daisy
2.1 Personality Characteristics of Gatsby
The creation of America is the beginning of the dream. American dream is gradually growing as the Americans developed the western area. The aim of the spirit is: as long as you make diligent efforts, you can make money and achieve your dream. Deeply influenced by the spirit, American people got highly motivated and were pushed upwards. Especially in the 1920s, the rapid development of American capitalism led to people’s life substance and economic prosperity. When they were indulged in the pleasure of material wealth, then humanity is gone. The pursuit of material was increasing and even surpassed the spirit pursuit, even to get rid of spiritual pursuit and longing. So getting money became their only goal, and in order to make it come true, they used any unfair means and abandoned morality, to seek nothing but profits as greedy as wolf. It is the main features of the jazz age, being rich materially but empty and barren spiritually. The American dream only left for money because of the extreme lack of spirits. Gatsby’s personality is full of rich aspiration to American dream.
Gatsby is a representative of optimism. He comes from a humble family, but always has been confident in life. He believes that through his efforts he can live a happy life ultimately. Even if falling out of love with Daisy, he never loses heart and ever does not give himself up. Even if there is failure in his life and love, Gatsby has always been working hard and taking aggressive attitude in life. He is encouraged and motivated. Finally, he becomes a billionaire. Besides, in a society in the prevalence of money worship, he has always believed in true love. Hosting a grand ball night by night, he looks forward to getting the love back.
Gatsby is the embodiment of diligence, too. Americans lay great worship of diligence. They admire the ones, who with their efforts, start bare-handed to improve and get better living conditions. Franklin, Lincoln etc, is a role model of diligent man, so is Gatsby.
