Acknowledgments  My writing of this thesis has successfully come to an end, and I hereby would like to extend my sincere gratitude to the following people for their selfless dedication and contribution to my thesis. 23934
My profound gratitude first goes to Associate Prof. Xu Jing, my supervisor, who has generously shared her inspirational and provocative ideas during many of our face-to-face discussion sessions. Just under her careful and patient guidance, I begin to get a clear idea of the paper and finally frame it out. Without her guidance and support, the path to the finishing line would have been a whole lot more bumpy.
I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to the teachers who have ever taught me throughout my college years and they inspired me to make efforts in English learning.
I am also very grateful to all classmates of the School of Foreign Languages who gave me direct or indirect help during my study in the college.
Last, I would like to thank my parents for their support.
Abstract
Once stumbling into society, youngsters become more and more frustrated since they find that the cruelty of reality is totally different from what they once imagined. Therefore, they lost their faith in themselves and in everything as well. The old values and beliefs collapse before the new ones are established. It is difficult for them to find a solution to this issue. These people are called the new “lost generation”.
The original “lost Generation” refers to those who used to be patriotic, romantic and adventurous but having experienced World War I and World War II, finally realized the craziness and barbarism of wars and the absurdity and cruelty of reality. Those young people did not become heroes as they once imagined but lost their ambitions and beliefs. Ernest Hemingway’s first novel, The Sun Also Rises was regarded as the proclamation of the “lost generation”. In this paper, I will make a simple analysis of the formation of the “lost generation” and give readers some solutions based on the analysis of Hemingway’s “lost generation” in his novels so that people could improve their reactions faced up with the reality.
The paper falls into six parts. The first part serves as an introduction. The second part aims at analyzing the origin of the “lost generation”. The third part explores the behaviors of the “lost generation” in terms of different ages. The fourth part probes into the causes of loss. The fifth part functions as a conclusion.
