Why is the tragedy of Sophy inevitable? What caused the tragedy of Sophy? Many foreign researchers pay more attention to the fate factors in Hardy’s work, such as Harriet lane’s Fate in Hardy’s Novels, Elliot’s Fatalism in Hardy’s works. Therefore, as to the tragic root of Sophy, foreign comments tend to think that “Sophy is the victim of fate”. However, researchers in our country hold different points. Nie Zhenzhao in his book Sorrow and Resolute Artist clearly pointed out: “directly decide the women’s miserable fate is her poverty, social hypocrisy on ethics and unfair legal system.” So, this paper will respectively analyze the cause of the tragic fate of Sophy from the society, environment and character.
Divided into five parts, this paper makes an extensive study of Sophy, the protagonist. Part one is the introduction. Part two mainly deals with Hardy’s life, works and his tragic vision. As the main body of the paper, the third part analyzes the tragic image of Sophy and the fourth part is the enlightenment from the short story. The last part makes a brief of the whole paper. In a word, this paper tries to reveal the various elements, direct and indirect, personal and social, which lead to the tragic fate of Sophy.
